Microsoft To Update Windows Home Server with Power Pack 1

LAS VEGAS—Windows Home Server will get the first upgrade since it was released this past November, in the form of Power Pack 1, which Microsoft showed here at CES 2008. Enhancements include support for PCs running 64-bit Windows Vista x64, a new backup option, and new remote access options. Power consumption will also be improved by Power Pack 1, and support for Japanese and Chinese languages will be added. The Power Pack will enable home computers running Windows Vista x64 editions to install the Windows Home Server Connector, and the Server will detect which connector versions are running and prompt you to update either the connector or the server so that all the versions are aligned.
You'll now be able to designate a new hard drive for use as backup. You can either choose specific content folders to back up or back up the entire collection. A new backup database repair wizard can detect and repair some backup inconsistency errors.
Remote Access has been refined, letting you choose whether users have access to computers tab, the shared folders tab, or both. A new Views drop-down list for shared folders will let users view thumbnails as well as icons. And finally, drag-and-drop from Internet Explorer has been improved to include multiple files.
Microsoft developers are working on other minor enhancements as well, and the update will be available via Windows Update in the first half of 2008, likely by this spring. You can read more about Power Pack 1 at Microsoft's related blog.
